Summer is officially HERE & the sun is out, so as always, it’s important to remember to protect your skin – especially after being stuck inside for the last couple of months. Nothing can ruin a fun summer trip quite like a sunburn. Air-Tan is here to help you enjoy the sun, be safe, & still have a fabulous tan.
- DON’T be tempted to get a “base tan” in the tanning bed. You may think it protects you from getting burned, but it’s actually the exact opposite! Experts estimate that going out in the sun with a base tan is equivalent to wearing an SPF of 3 or 4. More importantly, any tanning of the skin is a sign of sun damage so even minimal tanning bed use is significantly raising your chances of developing skin cancer. NOT worth it!
- Never skimp on the sunscreen. UV rays can damage your skin in just 15 min in the sun so make sure you apply your sunscreen (at least 15-30 SPF) before you go out & REAPPLY at least every 2 hours . Personally, I’ve found that reapplying frequently is more effective than a super high SPF at preventing sun burn.
- Get to know your skin! While skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, it’s also the most preventable & it’s much easier to treat when caught early so get familiar with your skin & watch for changes. Look for new skin markings, like moles, bumps, or places where your skin has changed color. Watch moles for changes in size, texture, color, or shape. Take note if a mole has uneven edges, differences in color, or one half that is different than the other. If you notice any of these, talk your doctor ASAP!
