As the weather cools down and we get out our sweaters, stock up on Pumpkin Spice and start to prepare for the upcoming holidays, we would like to invite you to keep in mind that it is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Air-Tan is, and forever will be, a proud supporter of Fighting the Fight!
Did you know…
- 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive Breast Cancer in her lifetime.
- Breast cancer is the second leading cause of Cancer death, and excluding Skin Cancers, the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in Indiana and the United States.
- In 2019, an estimated 268,600 new cases of invasive Breast Cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive Breast Cancer.
- Early detection saves lives!
In my own life I have had someone very close be effected by this horrible disease, my Grandmother. I am very close to my Grandmother and I remember finding out the news and being shocked – There’s no way this could happen to HER?! Personally, I never really thought of cancer as something that would come close to me, or anyone around me. It’s something you read about, hear about others having, but never fully grasp how terrifying it is until you come face to face with it. Thankfully after much mental, emotional, and physical endurances of treatment and a double mastectomy, she is now in full remission. The experience is not something I wish for anyone to go through personally or as an outsider looking in. However, it did bring so much awareness to my life and those around me.
This is a serious issue that hits home not just for me, but for many of us. Either from personal experience or through family and friends, we know how scary and dangerous the effects of this disease can be. Talking to your doctor about your family’s medical history is very important in determining screenings and if you should start getting mammograms early.
I know how easy it can be to get caught up in life and other distractions. Especially around this time of year, but it is so important to not forget to check-in with yourself. Early detection is one of the most important weapons in defeating this illness.
There are so many amazing resources for people to learn more about breast cancer, how to conduct a self examination, what to do if you have the disease and incredible support systems for those effected. One of the best places you can find all of that information is nationalbreastcancer.org
As we are getting ready for Halloween costumes, and all the planning of seasons to come, I, as well as Air-Tan, encourage you to “Think Pink” as you go throughout your days this month.
