As an avid bring-my-lunch to work kinda gal, I love the concept of bento boxes. A bento box is just a Japanese term for a boxed meal, but can range from super simple to super elaborate.
I love bringing my own lunch to work for a few reasons. The first is that I am a little frugal – I am always getting on my fiance’s back for never taking his lunch to work! He works 6 days a week – if he spends $7 a day on lunch, that’s $168 a month! If I had the same habit, it would be almost $350 a month just on lunch. Besides the cost factor, it is just not good for you! Even if you try to eat out and eat healthy, you are almost always consuming more calories, fat, and sodium than if you made the same healthy meal at home.
I have tried many lunchtime ideas, such as Lean Cuisines, but they are loaded with sodium and I’m often still hungry after I eat one. Leftovers are my favorite except I usually end up lugging around 3 or more containers. Sandwiches are fine, but just get OLD after awhile no matter what kind of croissant, bun, wrap, or fancy bread I use.
Which brings me to the Bento box. It’s a cute way to cram all sorts of food groups into one cute box leaving you satisfied and feeling good all day long. Here are pictures of a few of my favorite Bento boxes and Bento box lunches. Yes, some of these are designed for kids – kids love Bento boxes, too!
