Getting Smart about Sun Safety at 24 years old
As a former sun/tanning bed worshiper, I used to look for every opportunity to be out in the sun. Spending a lot of time outside was the perfect opportunity to get a tan for FREE, right?! But in my younger years, I was not thinking of all the damage I was doing to my skin. I used to spend my summer days outside with sunscreen only on my nose and cheeks, and I would try to get as brown as possible.
Now that I’ve worked at Air-Tan for close to two years, the nasty effects of the sun have finally fully sunk in with me. I’ve seen countless scars from people who have had skin cancer spots removed, and I’ve seen even more sun spots and wrinkles on people who have spent days upon days out in the sun. This past Memorial Day weekend was the first time in ages that I had slathered on the sunscreen, and it felt GREAT to do so! I got an aerosol can of SPF 85, and I basically hosed myself down, head to toe. I also wore a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun off my face. (I’m only 24, and I’m starting to see wrinkles around my eyes and nose! Ick!) When I came home, it was awesome to see that I didn’t have any sunburned areas, but I still had a super-dark tan from getting sprayed a level 4 the day before. I am so proud of myself! I feel like I have finally 100% kicked my bad sun habits.
