  1. Extend the Life of Your Tan

May 23, 2013 by Jennifer Poindexter

Are you heading to the beach or getting married? This month our featured product is the Air-Tan Extender. People are always concerned that their tan wont last long enough. With the Air-Tan extender, your worries are all gone!  The product will help your tan last a few more days and you can enjoy being tan on your sunny vacation! Here are a few tips when using the Air-Tan Extender:

    1. You want to apply the extender after you have taken your first shower from getting your Air-Tan. You will then apply it after each shower until your tan starts to come off.

    2. Always wash your hands after you have used the extender. There is a small amount of self tanner that could stain your hands.

    3. Start using product after first shower.

    4. Does NOT contain SPF.

So stop by Air-Tan in Broadripple or Fishers to pick up your extender during the month of May!

  2. Skin Cancer Awareness Month

May 20, 2013 by Katelyn Fry

Did you know May is national Skin Cancer Awareness Month? Before working here, I don’t remember hearing about skin cancer a lot. It still isn’t talked about nearly as much as other types of cancer, yet it is the MOST COMMON type of cancer in the U.S. Every year, there are more cases of skin cancer than breast, prostate, lung and colon COMBINED. Alarmingly, the American Cancer Society estimates an additional 1,000,000 cases of melanoma go unreported each year, and that number is growing.

Before becoming aware of the true dangers of the sun, I had really no knowledge of skin cancer. I have worked at Air-Tan for three years now and see evidence of skin cancer every single day in the spray room. I also know someone from high school who is currently undergoing treatment right now for skin cancer. He is 27 years old and has Stage 4 cancer that has now spread to his bones and organs. Cancer really is not a joke. One thing I have learned from talking to people who have been diagnosed – it does not matter your skin tone, how long you’ve spent in the sun, where you live – anyone can get it. Literally – anyone.

I am so glad I now know the facts and will NEVER put my skin through a tanning bed or lay out in the sun ever again. Do you know the facts? If not, here they are:

    • Treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancers has increased 77% between 1992 and 2006.
    • 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer.
    • Over the last 30 years, more people have had skin cancer than ALL other cancers COMBINED.
    • The vast majority of skin cancers are associated with UV ray exposure.
    • Of the 7 most common cancers in the US, melanoma is the ONLY ONE whose incidence is increasing.
    • A person’s risk for melanoma doubles if he/she has had more than 5 sunburns at ANY age.
    • One or more blistering sunburns during adolescence more than doubles a person’s chance at developing melanoma later in life.
    • Ultraviolet radiation (tanning) is a proven carcinogenic.
    • Just one indoor tanning session increases users’ chances of developing melanoma by 20 percent, and each additional session during the same year boosts the risk almost another two percent.
    • Just one indoor tanning session per year in high school or college boosts the risk of basal cell carcinoma by 10 percent. That risk is increased to 73 percent if one tans six times per year.

Now do you see why we are completely obsessed with Air-Tan?! It is 100% UV-FREE and will not cause cancer, wrinkles, or leathery skin. Any COLOR on your skin (from the sun or tanning bed) is sun damage. The “base tan” people like to get in the tanning bed or outside before a vacation so they don’t burn, is a complete myth. It doesn’t matter how you do it, any UV rays hitting your skin are actually damaging your skin and increasing your odds for skin cancer. If you haven’t tried Air-Tan before, come try us. You will look natural – our solution works with ALL skin tones – with ZERO of the harm and a small fraction of the time it would take if you got tan any other way. Always remember to use SPF and stick to the shade when you do spend time outdoors.

    Happy Air-Tanning!

  4. Skin Care News

May 14, 2013 by Emily Ross

I’ve found several different news stories pertaining to skin cancer/skin health that were interesting:

    • I’ve found many articles that repeat the fact that the occurrence of skin cancer in children has risen 2% per year from 1973 to 2009.  That is scary!  This article says that the biggest increase was seen among teens age 15 to 19, especially girls.  This is explained by the regularity of teenage girls laying out in the sun and using indoor tanning beds.  The same article shares the Skin Cancer Foundation’s tips for keeping your kids safe from the sun.  Really great information.
    • Harvard researchers have done a study that finds that redheads are more at risk for melanoma. Experts suggest that people with red hair be extra vigilant with applying sunscreen and get a skin cancer check up twice a year, as opposed to the normally recommended once yearly check.
    • In Iowa, dermatologists offered a free skin cancer screening at their capitol building for the staff there.  This sounds like a great idea.  I know many big corporations in town do various health screenings for high blood pressure, etc., so adding on the skin cancer screening seems like a logical addition.  Do you know of any place in Indy that offers free skin cancer screenings?  Please share!

  5. Have You Heard About UPF Clothing?

April 5, 2013 by Emily Ross

I’ve vaguely heard about clothing with sun protecting elements, so I looked into it to see a little more what it is about. All of us at Air-Tan are into staying away from the sun’s harmful rays and getting our tan the SAFE way. Anytime I’m on vacation, I avoid being out in the sun like the plague. I am the one camped out under the umbrella with my SPF on. I do not want to be wrinkly in my old age. I’m only 26, and I am already seeing the sun damage that I’ve caused myself on my face! Yucky!

The Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF) says that protective clothing is our first line of defense against the sun. Sure, regular clothing does provide protection from the sun, but did you know that you can buy clothing with even extra protection? You can buy clothes that have a UPF rating, which means an Ultraviolet Protection Factor. A regular t-shirt can block 80% of UV rays, but specially made UPF clothing can block 98% of rays. The SCF says these factors play into how much UPF a garment provides:

    - Tightness of the weave
    - Weight of the fabric
    - Type of fabric
    - Color
    - Amount of skin exposed

The SCF answers a  lot of frequently asked questions about UPF clothing here. When shopping for this type of clothes, it recommends that you buy the minimum for UPF 30, and that 30-49 UPF is considered “very good”, and 50+ is excellent. The retailer REI also provides a boatload of information on the topic here, and you can buy UPF clothing from them, as well.

Hanging out under an umbrella is another great way to protect yourself from the sun.

Specialty clothing can be pricey, so the SCF also recommends an additive called SunGuard that you can buy to put in your laundry that will add a UPF of 30 to anything you wash, and the protection lasts through 20 washes, and it only $1.99. It’s made by Rit, which is the brand that you may recognize from fabric dyes that you can buy at the grocery or mass retailers. I think this would be a great idea, especially for kids’ clothes since they grow out of everything so fast!

A popular question we get here at Air-Tan is if having a spray tan will protect your skin from the sun. The answer to that is no.  You will burn or tan the same as if you didn’t have the Air-Tan on at all, so make sure you are applying your SPF to your exposed skin, and definitely think about using some UPF in addition to your SPF.

  6. Wedding Color Schemes for 2013

April 3, 2013 by Katelyn Fry

Tis the season for wedding planning! While lots of couples get engaged over the holidays, the springtime is a popular time to plan  a wedding. I know because it seems like SO many of my clients at Air-Tan are preparing for their wedding. Now that I am one month from my own wedding, I feel like I have a much better grip on my likes and dislikes, but at first I was simply overwhelmed. I couldn’t pick a color scheme, location, dress – anything – for months. I am indecisive anyway. Combine that with perfectionist tendencies, and that is a recipe for STRESS!

I just kept pinning and pinning on to my Pinterest board. I did this for weeks before actually ever making any decisions. Soon, I saw most of my pins had a common theme. That was the theme I chose for my wedding. As you’ll see when I share my own wedding photos in a few months and from this blog post – I am not afraid of color. As a couple, we love splashes of vibrant color, so of course colorful themes are my absolute favorites.

    Summery, beachy color scheme

My first color scheme is this one found on Pinterest. I love these colors for a lake, beach, or summertime wedding with a nautical feel. Of course, 5 colors is a lot to work with. Simply, pick 2 or 3 main colors and use the other two just as accent colors for flowers or something else that could use more dimension in colors.

    Moroccan Color Scheme

This one is closest to my own wedding color scheme. While most of my wedding will be shades of white and blush, I am incorporating pops of magenta, coral, and turquoise (not present in the picture) into my flowers and table runners. This Moroccan color scheme or pinks, oranges, and corals just screams fun, summer, outdoor wedding to me. It would be a wonderful way to brighten up a dark venue and would look incredible with lots of candles.

Red, turquoise and gold color scheme.

This one is my absolute favorite of all of the color schemes. It’s timeless. I absolutely adore red and turquoise together. A splash of gold shimmer is a hot trend for this spring and adds another element to an otherwise basic color scheme. I was leaning towards this one so much myself until I realized why. Our living room, dining room, and kitchen at our last home had this exact same color scheme. I figured I would branch out from our normal and go a different direction. This one would also work wonderful with other hues of these same colors – think Tiffany blue or even mint, coral, with a splash of gold shimmer.

    Peach and Green Color Scheme.

This one screams garden party to me. It’s SO incredibly chic and girly, I just LOVE it. This would be perfect for an outdoor wedding or a wedding in a bar. You can incorporate almost all shades of green and peach and even coral into this. This is a truly elegant and classic wedding color scheme.

    What are your wedding colors?
