  1. Skin Cancer Awareness Month

May 20, 2013 by Katelyn Fry

Did you know May is national Skin Cancer Awareness Month? Before working here, I don’t remember hearing about skin cancer a lot. It still isn’t talked about nearly as much as other types of cancer, yet it is the MOST COMMON type of cancer in the U.S. Every year, there are more cases of skin cancer than breast, prostate, lung and colon COMBINED. Alarmingly, the American Cancer Society estimates an additional 1,000,000 cases of melanoma go unreported each year, and that number is growing.

Before becoming aware of the true dangers of the sun, I had really no knowledge of skin cancer. I have worked at Air-Tan for three years now and see evidence of skin cancer every single day in the spray room. I also know someone from high school who is currently undergoing treatment right now for skin cancer. He is 27 years old and has Stage 4 cancer that has now spread to his bones and organs. Cancer really is not a joke. One thing I have learned from talking to people who have been diagnosed – it does not matter your skin tone, how long you’ve spent in the sun, where you live – anyone can get it. Literally – anyone.

I am so glad I now know the facts and will NEVER put my skin through a tanning bed or lay out in the sun ever again. Do you know the facts? If not, here they are:

    • Treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancers has increased 77% between 1992 and 2006.
    • 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer.
    • Over the last 30 years, more people have had skin cancer than ALL other cancers COMBINED.
    • The vast majority of skin cancers are associated with UV ray exposure.
    • Of the 7 most common cancers in the US, melanoma is the ONLY ONE whose incidence is increasing.
    • A person’s risk for melanoma doubles if he/she has had more than 5 sunburns at ANY age.
    • One or more blistering sunburns during adolescence more than doubles a person’s chance at developing melanoma later in life.
    • Ultraviolet radiation (tanning) is a proven carcinogenic.
    • Just one indoor tanning session increases users’ chances of developing melanoma by 20 percent, and each additional session during the same year boosts the risk almost another two percent.
    • Just one indoor tanning session per year in high school or college boosts the risk of basal cell carcinoma by 10 percent. That risk is increased to 73 percent if one tans six times per year.

Now do you see why we are completely obsessed with Air-Tan?! It is 100% UV-FREE and will not cause cancer, wrinkles, or leathery skin. Any COLOR on your skin (from the sun or tanning bed) is sun damage. The “base tan” people like to get in the tanning bed or outside before a vacation so they don’t burn, is a complete myth. It doesn’t matter how you do it, any UV rays hitting your skin are actually damaging your skin and increasing your odds for skin cancer. If you haven’t tried Air-Tan before, come try us. You will look natural – our solution works with ALL skin tones – with ZERO of the harm and a small fraction of the time it would take if you got tan any other way. Always remember to use SPF and stick to the shade when you do spend time outdoors.

    Happy Air-Tanning!

  3. Wedding Color Schemes for 2013

April 3, 2013 by Katelyn Fry

Tis the season for wedding planning! While lots of couples get engaged over the holidays, the springtime is a popular time to plan  a wedding. I know because it seems like SO many of my clients at Air-Tan are preparing for their wedding. Now that I am one month from my own wedding, I feel like I have a much better grip on my likes and dislikes, but at first I was simply overwhelmed. I couldn’t pick a color scheme, location, dress – anything – for months. I am indecisive anyway. Combine that with perfectionist tendencies, and that is a recipe for STRESS!

I just kept pinning and pinning on to my Pinterest board. I did this for weeks before actually ever making any decisions. Soon, I saw most of my pins had a common theme. That was the theme I chose for my wedding. As you’ll see when I share my own wedding photos in a few months and from this blog post – I am not afraid of color. As a couple, we love splashes of vibrant color, so of course colorful themes are my absolute favorites.

    Summery, beachy color scheme

My first color scheme is this one found on Pinterest. I love these colors for a lake, beach, or summertime wedding with a nautical feel. Of course, 5 colors is a lot to work with. Simply, pick 2 or 3 main colors and use the other two just as accent colors for flowers or something else that could use more dimension in colors.

    Moroccan Color Scheme

This one is closest to my own wedding color scheme. While most of my wedding will be shades of white and blush, I am incorporating pops of magenta, coral, and turquoise (not present in the picture) into my flowers and table runners. This Moroccan color scheme or pinks, oranges, and corals just screams fun, summer, outdoor wedding to me. It would be a wonderful way to brighten up a dark venue and would look incredible with lots of candles.

Red, turquoise and gold color scheme.

This one is my absolute favorite of all of the color schemes. It’s timeless. I absolutely adore red and turquoise together. A splash of gold shimmer is a hot trend for this spring and adds another element to an otherwise basic color scheme. I was leaning towards this one so much myself until I realized why. Our living room, dining room, and kitchen at our last home had this exact same color scheme. I figured I would branch out from our normal and go a different direction. This one would also work wonderful with other hues of these same colors – think Tiffany blue or even mint, coral, with a splash of gold shimmer.

    Peach and Green Color Scheme.

This one screams garden party to me. It’s SO incredibly chic and girly, I just LOVE it. This would be perfect for an outdoor wedding or a wedding in a bar. You can incorporate almost all shades of green and peach and even coral into this. This is a truly elegant and classic wedding color scheme.

    What are your wedding colors?

  4. Spring 2013 Manicure Trends Straight From The Runway

March 22, 2013 by Katelyn Fry

It’s Spring!!!! Which means I am far more likely to keep up on my manicure routine. Manicure trends are ever-changing, so here are my top 5 trends for this spring straight from the runways of this season’s Fashion Week(s).

    1. Dark nails are making a comeback although they never went very far in my eyes. Look for navy, purple, and grey.

    Dark Polish

    2. Just enough metallic. Gold, silver, and bronze make fun additions to almost any color. Don’t do an entire metallic manicure, though. Just put a bit on nail tips or just add a bit to a few nails on each hand.

    A hint of metallic!

    3. Toned-down nails. These are my obsession lately. Look for nudes, whites, and pale hues of color. In my opinion, nothing goes better than an Air-Tan than this kind of mani.

    Pale and pretty.

    4. The un-French manicure. This is a great way to add some flair to your at-home manicure. Try a two-tone manicure using a vertical split between the two colors, horizontal, diagonal, or make a V or an X.

Love this asymmetrical neon/nude DIY design!

    5. Pointed nails. These aren’t my personal favorite, but they sure are popular this season! From the Kardashians to runway models, people are loving this new mani shape!
