As we approach the busy weeks of Spring Break season, it’s so important to review sun safety after being stuck in the cold weather for months. Vacationing is all about relaxing and having a great time, but nothing ruins a trip quite like a sun burn. How can you prepare for some fun in the sun?
- Don’t get a “base tan” in a tanning bed. You may think you are protecting yourself from the sun, but it’s quite the opposite. Even minimally using tanning beds can cause damage to your skin and significantly raise your risk of melanoma. Getting a “base tan” does not protect your skin, and you can still get a sun burn. If you want some color before you hit the beach, get an Air-Tan!
- Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. I can’t stress this enough. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher and reapply every 2 hours.
- Don’t forget about your eyes, lips, and scalp. These areas are susceptible to burns as well! Wear sunglasses that block UV light to protect your eyes, a wide brimmed hat to protect your hair and ears, and a lip product with SPF to prevent lip burns. It’s very important to reapply your lip balm because of the constant moisture on your lips.
- Be sure to have shade available during the sun’s strongest hours- between 10am-4pm.
