This is a question our Air-Tan technicians receive quite a bit from a customer who recently got a sunburn. The quick answer? No. It is not recommended to get tanned on those areas that are peeling. Since your tan will only absorb into the top layers of your skin, it will come off if your skin is peeling. This will result in a very uneven tan in those areas. We definitely do not want you to have to deal with a peeling spray tan, on top of your skin peeling. Check out the photos below for examples:
Not pretty, right? So what’s the best solution to this problem?
- Preventative measure is obviously the best. Be sure to wear sunscreen and reapply as needed. Avoid the sunburn that will cause the peeling!
- If it is minor flakiness, you may be able to exfoliate it off before your appointment. Be thorough and take note if it is still flakey.
- You may want to avoid getting an Air-Tan for a few days. As much as I understand the need to get a tan, this is a situation where it is best to let your skin heal before coming in.
