This is a very popular question that we get from rookie and long-time clients. Since there is a wait-time of 8 hours before you can shower, sweat, or get wet, it does involve a tiny bit of planning in order to get your Air-Tan. This eight hour period is very important, as it can take up to the full eight hours for the amino acids in your skin to fully develop the long-lasting tanning product in the Air-Tan solution. If you shower early, you run the risk of not being as tan as you’d like or not being tan at all.
Along those same lines, if you sweat within that 8 hours, the Air-Tan will sweat off of your skin, so when you shower you will notice a tan that is much lighter than you anticipate or you will notice no tan at all. For these reasons, I like to Air-Tan and go home and relax, especially in the summer months when sometimes just the act of stepping foot outside makes me sweat.
Your Air-Tan needs to be the final step in your beautifying routine. If you’re getting your hair colored, an eyebrow wax, and a pedicure; Air-Tan comes last. Why? If you got your hair colored on the same day you got your Air-Tan applied, your hair stylist could accidentally splash water on to your tanned skin. This will result in a spot if it occurs within the first 8 hours of getting your Air-Tan applied. If you get your skin waxed after having your Air-Tan applied (even days after), it will wax off your Air-Tan. Finally, if you got a mani or pedi after your Air-Tan, the nail technician, would most likely exfoliate off part of your tan. Also, if you wash or soak your hands or feet within the first 8 hours, your hands and feet will retain none of their tan. For this reason, I sanitize the palms of my hands when I need to wash them during the first eight hours, but I never run them under water or get the backsides of my hands wet!
Lastly, most people like their tan best one or two days out. If I have a special event on a Saturday, I tend to like my tan best if I got it on Thursday. If Thursday, doesn’t work, Wednesday and Friday are also great options. I never recommend Air-Tanning on the same day as an event, though, because we do have an instant bronzer in our tanning solution so that you can see what your tan will end up looking like after your first shower. Once your tan starts developing over the next 8 hours, you appear twice as tan because your tan has finally developed, but you still have on the instant bronzer, so the first day, until you shower, you are REALLY tan!! Also, the bronzer can rub off on clothing the first day, so if you do wear something light colored, you run the risk of the bronzer showing up on your clothing. The bronzer also has lots of moisturizers in it which gives you a slightly sticky feeling on the first day. For all these reasons, I enjoy my Air-Tan best after my first shower.
