There has been an upset in the indoor tanning industry. Surgeon General Boris Lushniak has issued a “Call to Action” against tanning beds. He just released a 112 page report on the risks of UV exposure, and the results were worse than I expected!
Some of his findings:
- 5 million people are treated with skin cancer each year
- 63,000 people have melanoma, which is deadly
- 6,000 of these are directly linked to indoor tanning
- Exposure to tanning bseds before age 30 increases a person’s risk of developing melanoma by 75%.
Thousands of people develop deadly skin cancer every day, and it is almost entirely preventable. In his report, Lushniak stated, “Tanned skin is damaged skin.” I think back to all the times I myself went tanning before dances and formals in high school. I don’t remember ever asking my mom for permission to go tanning, except maybe to drive me there. Had I known that my risk for developing melanoma was greater by 75% because I wanted a little color, maybe I would have thought a little more about it before pushing the little green button to start the tanning bed.
